One of my mentors, not directly but rather via his life, is Kai Greene. I just watched a motivational video created by a fan and it got me thinking about my weekend.
What did you do this weekend?
I started a new relationship with a company called Quantros. They hired me to be a developer and help them with a few projects and process. We are using VSO (Visual Studio Online) for all our builds and deployments. I don't know much about the VSO builds and deployment so I need to get up to speed.
How do I do this?
Well I worked all weekend and I spent the time that is necessary to learn what I need to know to fulfill the needs of my employer. Some say this is crazy... you spent your own time to learn? Why didn't you do that during "work hours"?
That's simple, the relationship between my employer and me isn't what defines me. I want to learn to become the best developer I can be. To become a craftsman of my trade.
Yes I worked all weekend and even cancelled supper plans with my Dad just so I could complete my task of learning what I needed to learn to become who I wanted to be. Later, I'll be sure to take the time to have supper with them. I don't neglect my family but rather I manage my time and my expectations. Be sure to stay focused enough to make your thoughts become the appropriate actions.
Thoughts Become Things
I think a lot about who I want to be. Who I will be in the next 6 months to a year. I care a lot about who I am and who I will become. Today's actions will determine who I will be tomorrow. I am on track to being all I can dream to be.
Who do you want to be?
I know exactly what I want and who I want to be. I am careful that my action are correct in determining who I want to be. My actions this weekend are helping me become that person I am envisioning. Every day I spend at least an hour and a half dedicated to working out to ensure that I will be in the physical condition that I envision in my head.
I do the same, well actually more, with my profession. I see myself and the best developer I can be. I can very clearly see the developer I am today and I have a dream, a thought, of the developer I want to be tomorrow. Today's expectation are not enough for the me of the future. Today's expectation will be met but that means I need to be ready to step up my game tomorrow. To be a better developer tomorrow that I am today.
You Are Awesome
Some things may / will limit you. Just because someone is a better developer than me doesn't mean I'm not awesome. A perfect example of this is Meeks, my workout partner of only a few months, is now squatting 315 pounds for many repetitions. This may demotivate some but that does NOT discourage me even though my squat is significantly less. My focus is becoming the best Bobby I can be, not to compare myself to Meeks.
However I am human and also happen to be a man. This means that it's very easy to let it affect me that another guy is lifting significantly more weight than me. Over the last decade (yeah been a while), I had to learn that I cannot compare myself to other but rather focus on how awesome I can be.
Focus on what you can do. Have kids and cannot dedicate your weekend to learning an new technology? No problem, don't. Do what you can. Do what you must to become that person you want and can be.
Don't neglect your family to be the best developer you can BUT how about not watching that "blah" TV show and instead learn a bit more about Web API or Entity Framework? What about some open source projects? Maybe add a new feature or fix a bug in that open source project that you really like. I have no doubt that maintainer will love to have some help.
Seriously, who do you want to be?
Basically I hope I can help motivate you into taking the time to think about who you want to be. Once you have a good mental picture of who you want to be think about where you are. Once know where you are and you know who you want to be, all you have to do is figure out what actions you need to take to get you there.
Find someone to help... email me! Let me know who you are, where you are, and where you want to go. I will do my best to help you develop a plan and get there.
Rock on and Become EPIC!
